Dr. Sophie Gilbert is a board-certified veterinary dermatologist and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD). With more than 30 years of experience, she specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin and ear diseases in dogs and cats.
Dr. Gilbert earned her veterinary degree from the University of Liège in Belgium in 1989. She then pursued a Ph.D. in Immunology at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where her research focused on the characterization of feline IgE. She later completed a residency in veterinary dermatology at the University of California, Davis, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 2004.
Throughout her career, Dr. Gilbert has practiced in Belgium, the United States, and Canada, both in specialty practice and academic settings, including as a professor at the University of Minnesota. Since 2011, she has been part of the team at Centre Vétérinaire Laval, where she draws on her extensive international experience to provide specialized care based on the latest scientific evidence.
What Dr. Gilbert finds most rewarding about dermatology is the investigative process behind each case. Persistent itching, recurring ear infections, or acute or chronic skin conditions often have complex underlying causes that must be identified in order to provide effective, long-term treatment tailored to each patient.
For Dr. Gilbert, every consultation is first and foremost an opportunity to connect with a family that wants the very best for their companion. She believes that attentive listening, transparent communication, and genuine collaboration with pet owners are essential to successful treatment. Her greatest satisfaction comes from seeing an animal regain comfort and quality of life, sometimes after months or even years of living with a chronic condition.
